Food for Our Future: How Local Authorities Can Shape Better Food Systems in Wales

The Future Generations Commissioner for Wales and Food Sense Wales have co-produced guidance for local authorities in Wales on how they can work with Local Food Partnerships to improve local food systems.

The Future Generations Report 2025 has found that without urgent action to increase access to local, healthy and sustainable food – Wales will not be able to achieve the well-being goals of the Well-being of Future Generations Act. The report recommends the development of local authority led food resilience strategies.

This guidance outlines good practice, case studies and resources around the food related policies which local authorities can control and influence. This includes guidance on governance, planning, procurement, access to food, the promotion of healthy diets and food waste.
